The Local SEO Checklist for Small Businesses in the US, UK, Canada and Australia

A practical local SEO checklist for service businesses and storefronts. Google Business Profile, Apple and Bing listings, reviews, citations and location pages that help you reach the map pack.

The Local SEO Checklist for Small Businesses in the US, UK, Canada and Australia

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "best brunch in Melbourne," Google shows a map with three businesses before any regular results. Those three spots get a big share of the calls, clicks and direction requests. This checklist covers what it takes to earn one, whether you run a storefront in Chicago, a clinic in Manchester or a mobile service in Vancouver.

Google Business Profile

1. Claim and verify your profile

Search your business name on Google Maps. If a profile exists, claim it. If not, create one at business.google.com and complete verification, which may be by video, phone or postcard depending on your category.

2. Choose the right primary category

Your primary category is one of the strongest local ranking signals. Pick the most specific option that matches your main service, such as "Emergency veterinarian" rather than "Veterinarian," then add secondary categories for other real services.

3. Fill in every field

Add your hours, holiday hours, services with descriptions, products, attributes, booking link and a description written for customers. Service area businesses should hide their address and list the cities or ZIP and postal code areas they actually serve.

4. Upload real photos regularly

Show your storefront, team, work and the inside of your location. Fresh, genuine photos build trust and give Google more reasons to show you. Skip stock images.

5. Post updates every week

Short posts about offers, events, new work or seasonal tips keep your profile active. They also give people one more reason to tap call instead of scrolling on.

Other maps and listings

6. Claim Apple Business Connect and Bing Places

iPhone users often search with Apple Maps and Siri, and Bing powers results in several assistants and in Microsoft Copilot. Both listings are free and take minutes to set up.

7. Build consistent citations

Your name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere. Start with the directories that matter in your country:

  • United States: Yelp, Better Business Bureau, Angi, Nextdoor and your local chamber of commerce.
  • United Kingdom: Yell, Thomson Local, Checkatrade or Trustpilot depending on your trade.
  • Canada: Yellow Pages Canada, Yelp Canada and HomeStars for home services.
  • Australia: True Local, Yellow Pages Australia, Hotfrog and hipages for trades.

Add industry platforms too, like Healthgrades for clinics, Avvo for lawyers or TripAdvisor for hospitality.

Reviews

8. Ask every happy customer

Most people are happy to leave a review if you ask at the right moment and make it easy. Send a direct review link by text or email right after a job is finished or an order arrives.

9. Reply to every review

Thank people for positive reviews and respond calmly to negative ones with a way to resolve the issue. Future customers read your replies as much as the reviews themselves.

10. Never buy or gate reviews

Fake reviews break Google's policies and, in the US, the FTC rule on fake reviews and testimonials allows significant penalties. The UK and Australia have similar consumer protection rules. Only ask genuine customers, and ask all of them, not just the happy ones.

Your website

11. Create a page for each core service and location

A dedicated page for "Water heater installation in Austin" will usually outperform one generic services page. Each location page needs genuinely useful content: local photos, team details, directions, service area, reviews and FAQs. Avoid copy and paste pages with only the city name swapped.

12. Add LocalBusiness schema

Structured data confirms your name, address, phone, hours and services to search engines and AI tools.

13. Make calling and booking effortless on mobile

Most local searches happen on phones. Put a tap to call button, booking link and directions near the top of every page, and make sure the page loads quickly.

Tracking

14. Track calls, forms and direction requests

Use UTM tags on your Google Business Profile website link, set up conversion tracking in Google Analytics 4 and review your profile performance report each month.

15. Track rankings across your area

Map rankings change street by street. A grid based rank tracker shows where you are strong and which neighborhoods need more work.

What to do next

Start with your Google Business Profile and reviews, because they move fastest. Then work on citations and location pages. Local SEO is not a one time setup. The businesses that stay in the top three are the ones that keep their profile active and keep earning reviews every month.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take?

Many businesses see better map visibility within one to three months. Competitive categories in large cities like New York, London, Toronto or Sydney can take longer.

Do I need a physical address to rank on Google Maps?

No. Service area businesses can hide their address and define the areas they serve. You do need a real location where you operate from, not a virtual office.

Are reviews really that important?

Yes. Review count, rating, recency and your replies all influence both your ranking and whether people choose you.
